Tips from Tom Ross

May 2024

  • We still have plenty of garden seed! May is the perfect time to plant squash, cucumbers, okra, cowpeas, watermelon, and cantaloupe. Get growing!

  • This month is a great time to plant tomatoes, peppers, and other veggie plants. We carry many varieties adapted for our growing area! When planting your tomatoes, we recommend you follow the steps in ‘Granny’s Tomato Recipe’ (found in the Ross Fact Sheets section, below).

  • If you haven’t already done so, fertilize your shade grass now. We recommend Scotts Lawn Pro or our Ross 21-5-8 fertilizer blend.  Be sure and give your fescue (shade grasses) a little drink during dry spells this month.

  • Give your lawn a “Shot in the Grass” …now is the time to fertilize your Bermuda grass. We recommend Ross 21-5-8 with 4% Iron, Scotts Lawn Pro, 34-0-0 11S, and 46-0-0 fertilizer blends.

  • Both stores have new plant shipments arriving weekly!

  • Apply soil amendments to your flower beds and garden for better results.  We suggest: Peat Moss, HUMALFA Nature’s Prescription, Cotton Burr Compost, The Cow Organic Compost and Manure.

  • Keep your flowers and veggies thriving by following a regular fertilizing schedule.  Doing this will promote more blooms and fruit.

  • We have Grade A Cedar and Redwood Mulch, in 3cf. bags, to brighten up your landscape and protect plants from hot weather.

  • We have a nice selection of chimineas and pinon wood available.  These make great gifts or treat yourself.  May is the perfect time to upgrade your outdoor living experience.

  • Weed-B-Gon, Trimec, and other broadleaf herbicides can be applied to control spring weeds.

  • Now is the time to implement fly control for your animals.  We recommend ADM Summer Beef Mineral with IGR Rumensin, and Garlic.  Also available with CTC.

  • Book your Sorghum-Sudan, Piper Sudan, Hybrid Pearl Millet, German Strain R Millet, Browntop Millet, BMR Sorghum-Sudan – some are in very short supply. We also have a limited supply of Red Ripper and Iron/Clay Cowpeas available for hay and soil building.  Call Mason or Tom in El Reno and/or Steve or Rusty in Chickasha to book.

  • Our Ross Spring Wildlife Plot Mix is ready!  It is a proven Oklahoma blend that attracts deer and gamebirds. This season, we have two mix options… one has Peredovik Sunflowers and one does not.  We recommend planting 50 pounds/acre, May through July.
